I'm asking this because I might switch to Debian soon -- I've heard good things about the sarge distribution. I would also appreciate comments about hardware compatibility. Thanks...

Debian Sarge is about as stable as it gets.

Rock solid. Switch now...no reason not to (unless you absolutly need up to date packages)

Debian Sarge is every bit as stable as Slackware, and beyond that it would be difficult to find something of useful comparison.

Sarge is super stable. I have a server with sarge (since sarge was released) and the only reason the uptime is not several months is because of power outages.

I like Sarge, I could only give it an OK as I have other OS's that I boot into. But Sarge hasn't crashed yet.

The only annoying problem is my wheel mouse, I can scroll down but not up. How weird is that?

Other than that it is a good distro.

Switch now, and you won't be disappointed. I like my Sarge/etch box so much so that I only tinker with my Gentoo box...........er....not that I like Gentoo any less...

Sounds good... looks like I'll be switching in October, or whenever I can get a new computer built.

You really should consider going with the "netinstall" if you have a fast internet connection:

    http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/

I usually download the "businesscard.iso" because it's really small and then pickup all the rest by FTP

    Sarge rocks:

Uptime 150+ days, so have fun with it

Also running Xandros Desktop Business OS 3.0 Deluxe. It´s a very very nice Desktop system based on Debian
