    3.1 Sarge and firewalls

    Hi all,

Does 3.1 Sarge have a firewall built in? I saw no notification about firewalls when I installed the O.S. If I need to add one, how do I go about it? I'm afraid I'll need to be 'spoon fed' as this is my first venture in Debian Sarge (see my last posting).

I don't know if Sarge comes with one but you can easily add one through apt. See these search results for firewall for stable: http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/s...le&release=all.

    Hi Guys,

Okay, I've downlaod the package (Shorewall) to my home folder. It appears to be a tar.gz file, so I clicked 'extract', what do I do next?

    Hi again,

Okay, so far so good, here's what I now have

    Setting up iproute (20041019-3) ...
    Setting up shorewall (2.2.3-1) ...
    #### WARNING ####
the firewall won't be started/stopped unless it is configured

please configure it and then edit /etc/default/shorewall
and set the "startup" variable to 1 in order to allow
    shorewall to start
    #################
Can you tell me how I access the firewall settings so I can configure it?

    Thanks,

    Martin

Debian Sarge has a firewall program calls ...."Guard Dog". Just use

    #apt-get install guarddog

You will need to configure it after installation though, go to their web site and follow the instructions.

    I myself use guarddog.

Linux doesn't really need a firewall, unless you run a server or something...
