    Ubuntu modem query

I've installed Ubuntu 5.04 and all is going well except for the modem (an external US Robotics Sportster). It is unbelievably slow in Ubuntu (works fine in XP and Mandrake) I am very new to linux. Any suggestions about how to fix this? One point that might help is that when I configured the modem in >System>Network I set it not to make any sound - however when it dials up it makes enough noise to wake the baby!

I did a search but didn't find much of help. In network settings I'm not able to change much just the modem port (/dev/ttyS1), the dial type and volume (which as I said is 'off').

Other than this one annoying problem Ubuntu really suits me.

if you use the kppp dialer this may help. Select the configure button, and then the Modem tab. Here you should select the modem (probably only one in the list and probably called Modem0) and then click the Edit button. On the Device tab, check to see what Connection speed you have, also that you have CTS/RTS flow control. On the Modem tab check to see what volume you have set. Also, while you're there, click on the Modem Commands (gives big pop up), and half way down, change the Dial String from ATDT to ATW2DT (the W2 in the middle causes the modem to return the real connection speed). You can now Okay out of the configuration screens.

Then, when you dial up, make sure that the "Show log window" tick box is ticked (this gives you a window that shows, amongst other things, your connection speed). Once connected the KPPP modem symbol should appear on your taskbar/sysbar , which allows you show stats on the connection, and disconnect.

    have fun

Use Suse 10.1 and occasionally play with Kubuntu
Also have Windows 98SE and BeOS
