Newbie: XWin install problem - Can't find screen
Hi Folks,
Apologies, newbie here.
I am trying to install Debian-Sarge onto a DEC Alpha Miata-class PWS-500a and I am having issues with the XWindows install.
I'm using a Matrox Melennium video card, and I've tried both the mga and vga drivers at various resolutions and scan rates - no joy. The diagnostic output correctly identifies the card, and the mga driver states that this card is supported, but then states that it can find no screens (!). It then disables the X server and dumps me to the console.
Is ther some magic handshake I've missed, or am I just not holding my mouth right?
Frustrated,
Gary

can you paste into us a copy of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/X11/XF86Config file. Specifically the bits with the Section "monitor" , Section "device", and Section "screen" .
Thanks
Nerderello
Use Suse 10.1 and occasionally play with Kubuntu
Also have Windows 98SE and BeOS

Well, I've tried everything I can think of, and everything I could find on the net. I've installed discover and mdetect. I've re-installed X and reconfigured until my fingers are sore and I'm about to break something!
The card is a Matrox Millennium I (4MB) and the screen is an HP L1702. I've tried both the MGA and VGA drivers with every possible configuration permutation...no joy.
Can anyone tell me what is going wrong?
Attached is the log file:

Can you give us a paste of 'lspci -v', and your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Hmmm... In that I didn't input the BUS ID, it's a little puzzling why it chose THAT one.
Okay, the situation now is:
Rather than mess with the existing Debian install, about which I know precious little, I tried another distro, Suse 8.1 for Alpha, which installed and came up with no problem. X works like a champ first time.
However, I would still prefer Debian since the Alpha is still actively supported on this distro. Suse 8.1 is the last published version for Alpha, and their support for Alpha has been discontinued. They will not even publish security patches for this 8.1 version. Apparently, it was ported for their internal use to keep some Alpha hardware they had running.
So...Could I copy the conf files from this install to a Debian install and have it work? What files would I need to copy, and from where and to where ?
Sorry guys...like I stated above...newbie. I am learning, but not as fast as I need to...
Thanks for all your help! It is sincerely appreciated!

Hmmm... I re-read Burnit's reply. I didn't specify the BUS ID during the install process. This was read during a probe of the hardware, per the line quoted above.(--) PCI: (0:12:0) Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA 2064W [Millennium] rev 1, Mem @ 0x09950000/14, 0x09000000/23, BIOS @ 0x09940000/16
Why would the probe identify the PCI devices, but not list the BUS ID for the Matrox Millennium 2064, and then identify, through a hardware probe, the correct Matrox card with a BUS ID that was not listed in the PCI devices?
My head hurts...
