Ubuntu, KDE, and the Desktop
Ive used Fedora Core 2-4 and RedHat (7-9) in the Past as well as SUSE but Ubuntu seems to have an annowing bug on the desktop and Konqurer. It simply wont update listings of directories. For example if FireFox saves a file to the desktop it wont show up untill i logged out and logged back in. Same thing if i make a file using say vim from a console. Its odd and its annoying.
BTW im running KDE 3.4 and Ubuntu "Breezy" 5.10.
vim i think was 6.3 and Firefox is 1.0.6
Any ideas?

*sighs*
i really dont care about the semantics of this... i just want to know if there is a solution to my problem... so please stop arguing... id just like some help.
And since you all seem to know so much about Ubuntu, i have another question. How do you add a user created service to a runlevel. I made the script and added it to the correct folders even made the synlinks to the right runlevels, yet it still does not run at startup. It does work as i can run it from the command line. Any ideas? also how do i add it to that neat GTK based Services app in Ubuntu.

lifewarped, the best advice I could give you is that Breezy is still in beta, and since Ubuntu releases every six months and is based on a six month snap shot of Debian unstable it tends to be very up to date but perhaps a bit wonky in it's initial few weeks of a release. I'd head over to the Ubuntu forums they're more likely to be of help on this but if it were me I'd use Hoary, which is still the latest stable release. I've had it running for a month or so now just to check it out and the latest Kubuntu desktop has been backported for it and runs really well, I also had issues with the Kubuntu desktop when I tried Breezy. That is unless you want to trouble shoot which I'm sure they'd appreciate but that's beyond my skills. jens, thank you for pointing out I wasn't helping just mounting the soap box it was advice well taken and I appreciate it. I disagree with some of your statements but the world will still turn whether you and I agree or not.

I removed the "Kubuntu vs Ubuntu" argument from this thread because as the original poster mentioned, it did nothing to solve his/her original problem. The point of this forum is to help folks, not get into semantic debates.
