    Problem with arts and alsa

Here's my problem: When I start up KDE on my laptop, it plays that login sound just fine, but then I can't run any other audio applications until I kill arts. Since I use alsa for sound drivers, I thought about uninstalling arts, but it takes too much stuff with it if I try to remove it with apt. Since I usually have XMMS running on my laptop, I view this as a major problem. I'm running Debian with KDE 3.3 on the laptop. Anyone have any suggestions?

Just disable the system sound in the KDE Control Center.
That will cause the ARTS daemon to not run.
