    Debian Linux installation problems

I was trying to install Debian on my box and I ran into several problems:

1.Display resolution is poor with GNOME

I already did the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 command at the root console and after finishing and exiting I did a [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Backspace] to reboot.

My display is a Compaq FS740 on 82810E DC-133 CGC [ I used the VGA option during installation which accodring to the manual of my monitor is supported. With VESA I didn't get anything on my screen. ]

Note to myself: Hmmm! Maybe increasing the color bit will do the trick? The screen with Xandros uses 16 bit High Color Plus... And the screen is at 1025 x 768.

2.I use dial up with a external modem that my Xandros distro seem to detect with no problems.

I don't know how to do this with Debian. I tried setting up a network connection and Debian detected the eth0 card but didn't see the external modem! How do I know if that piece of hardware was detected during the installation and how do I set a simple dial-up connection to the Internet.

Believe me, I already consulted Debian's Bible and the details are spotty in the dialup connection to be nice with the authors...

I apologize for being such a n00b and for asking for help this frequently but really, I really would like to use Debian instead of Xandros [ Which has been good in general to be fair...]

    Regards,

    Well...

    Good choice....

For X resolution probably you should read the XFree86 log (/var/log/XFree86*.log): in this file will be printed monitor specifications, various warning and everything usefull to setup correctly your X enviroment.... probably you will edit manually you XF86Config-4 to have the best result (for example with my LCD monitor, to use the 1028x1024 resolution, I tried a lot of values for horizontal & vertical freqs to see something... now works perfectly ).

You dial-up connection can be setup with pppoeconf... then you can connect with pon <provider> and shutdown connection with poff. If the modem is not recognized, probably you should recompile a Linux kernel for having support about serial line (but this doesn't garantee that everything works...)

Remeber that the software it's the same on all distros... at least the mosts...

    Try, try, try....
When using Windows, have you ever told "Ehi... do your business?"
