Ubuntu Install Problems

ok i've tried ubuntu on the live cd on the laptop, works flawlessly and i would love it as my desktop platform

however when i try installing ubuntu normally ( ie not passing parameters like acpi=off) i get a kernel panic every time.

i cant descypher the kernel dump on the screen, i was wondering if anyone knew or could point me to the problem

now from that i supposed acpi was causing the problem so i booted with
"linux acpi=off" thinking that my avoid the problem however i am confronted with another kernel dump:

im running on an Athlon xp 2600+ with 1GB of PC2700 DDR ram with an Epox EP - 8K9A71 motherboard with two ATA 100 80GB Maxtor Hard Drives.
I have tested the ram in other machines, it is fine, i have tested the hard disks, those are fine too, im stuck
