Having problem with Ubuntu's screen configurations
I tried re-partitioning one of my computers, but ended up completely nuking it. It's an HP, and they wanted $23 for a recovery CD (screw that, I already paid $800 for the comp 2 years ago). Anyway, so I decided to take this chance to install linux on this computer as well. I chose Ubuntu just because it's one of the easiest ones out there (this computer is used by everyone in the house).
Anyway, I have no idea what's going on, but Ubuntu isn't coming off 640x400 resolution. I checked /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and it's configured properly with resolutions up to 1024x768. It also recognized the Intel graphics chipset, and the HP monitor. The only thing I see that could be out of place in xorg.conf is that the monitor's horizontal and vertical refresh rates aren't defined. So, can anyone help me figure out what's going on? Everything was recognized, but it still won't let me choose anymore than 640x400 as a screen resolution.

A Mod can go ahead and delete this if they want. Turns out it was the veritcal and horizontal refresh rate that was the problem. Once I set it, it all worked. Sorry for posting the question without trying this first (I was freaking out).

hi venkidas !
Welcome to the LinuxForums.
you should start a new thread. anyways, check your Monitors Manual and note down supported HorizSync, VertiRefresh rates and Resolutions.
open Terminal and execute this
enter refresh rates and select resolutions when prompted. reboot your machine.Code:sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
CasperIt is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
