Installing Debian with a USB memory stick

My only computer with a CD burner is out of commission, hence the reason I'm installing Linux, so I can't download a bootable CD to install and of course, being a new computer, it doesn't have a floppy drive. The only thing I do have that works is a USB memory stick.

I found on the Debian install text that you can extract boot.img.gz to the USB drive and then copy over a CD image to the drive. Then boot and install. The only other computer I have access to has WinXP on it and I can't figure out how to extract the file to the USB stick, boot.img.gz.

How can extract boot.img.gz to the USB stick in Windows?

I don't have a OS to put on it right now, since it crashed after and electrical strom knocked out the power...

Why don't you install an os onto it? That'll fix the problem... unless it's something more serious, like the hard drive being ruined after the black out. Test it and tell us what you find.

I don't have anything to put on it... That is why I'm trying to download a Debian ISO onto a USB drive and make the drive bootable so I can install an OS.

And you don't have any other operating system cd-rs laying around?
    any?
I don't recommend using usb sticks for stuff like storing real operating systems on, just stuff like emergency dos utilities. They will be very slow for copying files from.

You can probably try using Damn Small Linux's USB image. I think it'll be enough to get you going with at least an initial system. From there you can download whatever you need and burn CDs. I've never tried it, but there's instructions on how to get it working on the website.

Of course, be sure that you have at least 512 mb on that stick...
