Knoppix wasen't designed to be installed to the harddrive, it was designed as a live cd, but if you really want it.
When installing it you will probably use cfdisk or fdisk to create the partitions for linux, you would need to make 2, the normal partition just for the base system and such, usually a ext3 or ext2. Well, you will also need to make an extra partition on type linux-swap, swap is used as ram, when you don't have enough ram normally linux uses swap as ram also so it doesn't go real slow and stuff that happens when you don't have much ram

Knoppix is great on a hard drive. For changing the partitions, Knoppix has QParted which can re-size Windows partitions in addition to creating Linux or Linux swap partitions. You might find QParted under "System Tools" or something similar. To have an enjoyable experience with Linux, you should consider getting additional RAM. eBay.com is a good source for inexpensive RAM.

It depends on what you want to do. Everyone will have different opinions, mine follow:

Average new user, wanting to learn about Linux:
5-10 Gb hard drive, 125 Mb RAM, minimum 133 MHz processor
Win98-2000 --> Most current distros will do, but go easy

Very small install to learn about Linux or to do limited work:
3-5 Gb hard drive, 32-64 Mb RAM, 486 or better
Win3.1-98 --> DamnSmallLinux would like this

    Minimal Linux:
    600 Mb hard drive, 16 Mb RAM, 486 (386?)
Works for Windows 3.1 --> try Slackware 8.1

Fairly new user, wants to try new things, games, multimedia, but not huge amounts of music or other media files:
10-20 Gb hard drive, 250Mb RAM, 1000 MHz processor
If it works with WinXP, any current distro will work
    /IMHO
