    How to start kde

    Hi,

I'm new to debian (having migrated from FC2) and I just finished a netinstall. I installed kdm and the k desktop environment, but when I bootup and run startx I get dumped into gnome. How can I start KDE? and is there a way to make it the default?

    Thanks.

Do you have kdm or gdm? Do you get booted to either? If not, and all you have after boot is a prompt, become root, then try either:
    gdm
    or
    kdm

Can you get one or the other? If so, you should be able to go into, "sessions" and choose kde as your desktop.

At the log in screen, you can choose what type of session you want.
Just choose KDE and it will ask you if you want to set KDE as you default session or not, then say yes.

Replace the GNOME line in your ~/.xinitrc (I think it is gnome-session) with startkde.

I am like less than a week into Linux & I really need some help please..

Okay.. so yes I am having the same trouble going into Gnome instead of KDE.. I did have the KDE working but for some reason it switched over to Gnome.. I need the idiots verion of what to do to fix this.. like a step by step walk through including things like how you alter things.. I have no idea of how to edit anything or where to find it or what exactly.. I am comming from a Windows world of point & click.. I would really like to learn Linux but for me at this point it is like learning a Foreign language.. very cryptic & odd this whole thing is.. I am more than willing to learn but I do need some assistance.. if someone could please give me some help I would surely appricate it!! Thanks much!!

Get into a console, type 'nano /home/you/.xinitrc', replacing 'you' with the name of your home partition of course, and then scroll down to the lines with like '# exec startkde' and '# exec gnome', and uncomment (remove the # from the beginning of the line) the one you want to start when you run 'startx' after you boot. Also, you can add different ones on there, just search google for something like 'icewm .xinitrc' or whatever window manager you want to use. Any more questions, feel free to post again, but on a different thread.
