Which version to use for a 486?

I just snagged a Thinkpad 701cs (the one with the folding keyboard), which I hope to use for text input/ impressing girls.

    It is a 486 DX4-75 with 16mb ram and 780mb harddisk space.

I want to know 1-whether I should install woody or potato on it (would woody make it too slow)?
2-Will X windows run acceptably? (especially if I compile the occasional snippet while it runs)
2-b-If so, what version should I use?

I also want to know whether to use a 2.2 or 2.4 kernel-- I saw a site where some guy with the same laptop model compiled a custom 2.4 with APM support and not much else, but does using 2.2 save on precious resources?

Nah.. you should be just fine with the 2.4 kernel

X would run fine.. depending what window manager you run in and what you run into it.

Neither.. they're both obsolte.. I would just get sarge (current s table) or etch (testing).

Vector is 586 only, and sarge would definitely not fit on my hd, and modern versions of most apps tend to be more bloated. I am considering using DeLi linux, but I would prefer debian.

You might want to try that Elive CD...it looks pretty cool, is small and has synaptic...nice little distro there!!! I am sure its hardware detection would pick up your machine...

Cool looking laptop. I'd go with damn small linux, as it's debian based and very light on recourses (it uses fluxbox as the window manager), it should run well on your new chick magnet
