virus wise, linux is alot better than windows
    it features alot more security
its a lot less prone to virii, and the fact that you should not be logged in as root means that if anything exectutes it will not have permissions to touch any system files

    firewall way
    *nix is/was a server distro
most webservers use it in the world, thus it has to be safe
it does feature a firewall in many distro's
which i would say is better than windows one

if you are worried about virii, look up clamav

There are viruses out there but most are proof of concept. The inherent security of the system, system directories/files are not usally writable by normal users so if a regular user did get infected by some virus it in theory could only destroy the users files. Danger usually comes from rootkits designed to get root passwords. Because *n?x systems generally come in a much more hardened setup than windows for example you can feel pretty secure but then again there is always room for tighter security. further hardening etc.
