    Forcing the fans to spin!!!

Ok, on me laptop (Toshiba Tecra 8000), i have a fan (not the cpu fan, the other one which i keep on forgetting its name i just call it Jack), well, the fan spins sometimes when i boot up, but i want it to spin forever and ever... but it wont... now what i have done is gone into the bios, and made sure the fan wasnt on quiet... it wasnt... it was on performance...

now the real problem, is that the fan starts spinning too late and me poor laptop gets way too hot for its liking.... i want it constantly spinnning because i want it to, i dont care about noise, it isnt that loud (infact its quiet quiet)..

so i really am asking for two things...

1.)Is there a way to drop the tempurature needed for the fan to start running?? aka, hypothetically, lets say its starts running at 28 degrees celcius... i want it to start running at 27 degrees celcius...

2.)Is it possible to enter some code or do something to the kernal to force this fan to constantly run no matter what??

is any of this possible, and if so how...

    thank-you for your time...

Try http://www.buzzard.org.uk/toshiba/. Go to the download page and download the source, and install the package. You'll have to go through the documentation to see what the binary is called, but according to that website, you should be able to run your fan to your heart's content.

    Howdy chris-harry (grin)

So ... you found linuxforums.org (grin)

cool site aha ... this is the first i've dropped in for a really long time. I'm glad it's still here. Very much the freestyle Linux thing ... with all the sub-distro board catorgories. Along with the usenet access too.

It has been so long .... i had forgotten all about it (oh dear). But remembered this morning. Thought i'd go for a look but went to linuxforums.com instead.

It seems like a good place too, no problems there ... but it's pretty much so a mirror of this one, even the name is almost the same (scratch_head.png).

Not to worry though ... i don't know much about laptops but it sounds like there must be some governor controlling it's operation. Something similar to cpufreq support in the kernel. You know ?, the kernel facility that allows you to change your proccessor speed. Handy for laptops when you don't need the extra cycles put out by a Ghz cpu --- heat etc.

Your mention of the term "performance" makes me think of that, as the cpufreq governors in the 2.6.x kernel come as "performance, ondemand, and userspace" aka "fullon, varies between low and high, and you have to switch it over on the cli".

Have a look through the ACPI configuration in your kernel etc.

ACPI/APM can be buggy at times, and probably needs some tweaking.

But as mentioned i know scrap about laptops, just though i'd say howdy

    Good Luck ...

the makefile wasn't created because your configure failed. were you running debian last time? if not then it could be because it was looking for x.org and not XF86.
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?
