Booting in textmode [Debian 3.1 Sarge] - id:2:initdefault
Hello,
I'm quiet new to linux, but have some little experience with Fedora & Suse.
I just installed Debian 3.1 Sarge with only the Desktop Enviroment packages.
When I boot my PC it always enters the graphical login manager. I would like to start in textmode (because I want to install the NVIDIA-drivers for example).
When I check /etc/inittab it says "id:2:initdefault". Normally you change it to id:3:initdefault and it's oke, but this doesn't work.
When I rename /etc/rc2.d/S99gdm it boots in textmode, but it's not the "nice way" to do this. But when I do "startx" GNOME starts (I prefer KDE), when I do "startkde" I got an error.
Anyone has an idea how to change this in a proper way? Do I need to remove the gdm-package or something?
Greetings,
l:x

Why don't you use the command console, i mean the terminal where you can do all the command line stuff. You can even install KDE through that! Once you install KDE & you restart the pc during login you can login through KDE or GNOME session or you can make KDE as your default login.

Get into /etc/init.d and do the editing what ever you want-basically you have to get rid of GDM which is the Gnome desktop login.

init3.d you can remove what you dont want to start then change your runlevel to 3. i just renamed the s99gdm on my box. i see nothing wrong with that. as for starting into kde with startx check out .xinitrc file (in ~). basically, whatever commands you put in there will execute when x starts.

Infoseeker: Indeed, that's a nice way of getting in text mode... Stupid of me not to see that option :s
DoctorDan: I've found a nice article explaining the Run Level-stuff (for newbies like me) => http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/212
Also, I'll look further for some info concerning the .xinitrc file.
Thank you all!!
