Kubuntu 5.10 "Breezy Badger" and USB/Ethernet Cable Modem
I have a problem with getting my brand new Thomson Broadband Cable modem to work. It can be used through USB or Ethernet and I've tried both. With it connected to the USB port the PC Link light of it starts shining. The other lights should be OK except that Cable Link light flashes, I'm not sure if it's ok, the manual is not the best.
The manual says that when Cable Link light flashes it means that the connection is not plugged by the ISP, but I couldn't understand if it meant that if only the light flashes or if the light flashes while other lights should be ok. The ISP said that the cable connection should be plugged to my apartment at the moment and working.
I've tried going to the Internet options of my Kubuntu but I don't see the "Administration mode" button eventhough it is there. I saw a picture of what the screen should look like and the real thing seems to be missing the bottom buttons. However, I managed to overcome this problem by using tab.
When I manage to press the button by using tab and enter it will prompt for my root password and no matter what I put there (I've tried the password that should be root password and it works everywhere else) it will always just refresh the Internet options window and doesn't let me enable my ethernet card nor the cable modem (if plugged to the USB port).
I've tried the Kubuntu Install to determine if the problem is with the computer or with the ISP and it seems to find the ethernet card(s), depending on if the cable modem is on USB port or in Ethernet port. The error I get is that it doesn't find any DHCP server.
The computer model of mine is Compaq Deskpro 6000 with Pentium II 333mhz (Klamath). I know it's old, but makes a good internet browser computer for the rest of the family while I use a better one. The ethernet card's name is Compaq Netelligent 10/100 TX Embedded UTP. It's integrated to the motherboard as far as I know.
