    just installed Debian

I am brand new to Linux. I just installed Debian because I heard it was good. I had no problems installing, but now I don't know any command line. I just want to get gnome or kde running, and for it to run every time I start up. Thanks.

What was the error? You may not have installed a graphical desktop. When you got to the screen with the choice of station you wanted to setup, did you push space bar on the one you wanted and then enter or just enter?

    apt-get install x-window-system gnome
or replace "gnome" with "kde". if your system isnt that great i would suggest xfce or fluxbox, something like that instead of kde or gnome. gnome will be nicer to your system resources than kde, but xfce or fluxbox will be even better on ur system resources.

oh yea, you must be root probably, so type 'su' and enter ur root pass before all of this.
