So did you try including -f? (sudo apt-get -f dist-upgrade)

If you continue to get many errors, it might be a better solution to download Breezy. With this, you can also re-install later should you need to.

So their's still nothing upgraded?
Try to install all missing packages first, and do the upgrade again.
If you don't have your original repos anymore, download them manually(they should get replaced anyway):
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/a/abiword/
...and install them like this:
sudo dpkg -i packagename
PS: keep in mind that auto-upgrades do include a risk!

dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 857 package `abiword-gnome':
missing version
so i tried to install the abiword-gnome package in the same way and got the exact same error
Thanks for the help!

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

abiword-gnome but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
