Getting DVD drive to work
I am running Xandros 3.0 on a desktop pc. I have been using linux for 1 week now and cannot get my DVD drive to read DVD's. The drive will play CD's and read from a CD, but a DVD(even unencrypted) will cause the drive to just spin and spin. The properties say: Device is not mounted, Device: /dev/hdc Driver: ide-cd Model: DVD-ROM SD-612. I assume I need to "mount" the drive and possibly update the driver. How do I do that? Thanks for the help.

Was your DVD drive able to read DVDs on other operating systems?

Initially, yes, but after changing hard drives and reloading Windows 98, I was unable to get it to play dvd's. My frustration was one of my many reasons for switching to linux.

I have another DVD drive collecting dust in my basement. Can I just physically replace one with the other and GO, or do I need to "tell" the OS that there is a new piece of hardware to install. If so, how do I go about that?
- 11-09-2005 #6Just swap it out and reboot. Make sure the master/slave jumper is set to the same thing on the new drive as the old one. Linux shouldn't care.

I tried the other DVD drive and the computer would not even boot up. It gets stuck on the Dell logo screen, I don't even think it is getting past the system bios. What do you think - 2 bad drives or could something else be wrong?

Sounds like your jumper settings for /slave/master/Cable Select is wrong. Play with the jumper to see if you can get it right. The CS/Cable select is usually the easiest to use as long as any other devices on the same cable are set to this too.
