    clock runs fast w/ smp

I'm running Ubuntu "Hoary Hedgehog" with kernel 2.6.10-5-686-smp on a SONY VAIO PCV-RZ26G. I'm running the smp kernel because my processor is a P4 with hyperthreading, and the only way (i've found) to reap the benefits of this with linux is through using the symmetric multi-processing kernel. The problem is that the seconds tick by about 3 times as fast as they should and as a result days are very short (about 8 hours). I also have the 386 and 686 versions of the 2.6.10-5 kernel (both without smp) and the clock runs correctly, but the processor isn't nearly as fast and system resources seem to be affected adversely. I ran Fedora Core 4 before Ubuntu, and it recognized the smp out of the box as well as ticking the seconds correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Two options:
    1) Create a cron job to run NTP every hour or so
    or
    2) The preferred way: compile your own kernel and see if that fixes it.
