xandros OCE IS Crap. I need something else debian based (& free).

reading a few reviews that suggested it (and a few that didnt), i have found that xandros is the worst pile of sh** i have ever come across (so far in my distro quest).

things i hate about xandros OCE:
    - crippled apt
    - can't install amarok (theres only xmms)
    - boot loader (lilo?) is on the extreme side of slow
    - takes forever to boot
    - login screen makes Windows (*notice capital) look good

    things i love about xandros:
    - boot loader seems good for lilo (if it is lilo)
    - clean & tidy desktop and file manager
    - menu is very well set out
    - hardware detection is sik (very cool), still wont print to my canon ip 1000 though...

based apon my analysis of xandros, what debian based distro should i go for?
i am in the process of getting Ubuntu, and like the idea of debian.
if there are any others which you think i should try, please post them.

    thanks

If you don't like Ubuntu, you might try Mepis. It's a live-cd but has the hard drive installation options built in.

i have heard good things about mepis. one of these days i will be able to download distros at will, but right now i only have a 500mb download limit, so it is really impossible.

thank you Ozar for your suggestion.

    Why Debian-based?

    Why not Debian?

I tryed A LOT of distros, to my taste nothing beats it.

Mepis is good, but if you are limited to a 500MB download, you could try http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ or install Debian from the minimal CD build:
    http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/

Nothing like Debian based using the base of all Debian based distros

Plus, with the net install, you get the system up to date.
