    Debian booting problems

A few weeks ago, I used apt-get upgrade to upgrade some packages on my debian system. I guess in doing so, I overwrote some config files that I needed to boot. I would like to fix it, but I'm not exactly sure if/where the config files were backed up. I did a chroot /mnt/hda3 on knoppix to see if I could do anything, but couldn't figure it out. When I try to boot, it seems to work, until it hangs at a specific point (I'll try and post what it says later). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
