I'm not sure what you mean by selected volume, to mount a floppy, just:
Code:mount /dev/fd0 /where_you_want_to_mount

the "stardward way" to add to psic's post would be
Code:mount /dev/fd0 /media/floppy

gentlemen, am very new to linux. after typing in commands, i am asked to specify the file system type. do not quite understand. please steer me in the right direction, thx.

normally you don't need to say what filesystem. For fat32, try
It will depend on what filesytem your floppy is.Code:mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /media/floppy

Unmount it. Instead of "mount blablabla" just do:
so, for instance:Code:umount /where_it_was_mounted
umount /media/floppyStumbling around the 'net:
