anyone done this before? the default "beep" works, but nothing else. In my quest to liberate myself from the dreaded MicroSoft grasp, I am verty close to transfering all of my normal functions to the Debian VMWare instance. Has anyone succeeded in getting the alsa drivers to work under VMWare Workstation 4.x?

Take a look at http://www.thepenguin.org.uk/alsa/. There's a utility referenced there called vmwaredsp which I'm using successfully. It doesn't work for arts, but it works for esd.

    Installing Debian on VMware

There are some answers to common problems here

Try double clicking on the sound icon in the bottom right, I have managed to get it working however you need to turn your speakers up.
