    Help with printer?

Im in ubuntu 5.10, an decided to try out my old printer.
It's a HP deskjet plus, and plugged into parrelell port #1. I installed it like i do in windows. And then i clicked on print a test page, and it started working, but then it just prints out random gibberish. THen it keeps on going, printing page after page, i tryed cancelling the jobs but still it just keeps printing, i had to turn the printer off to stop it from printing. My question is, how do i get it to actually work?

Open your favorite browser, navigate to localhost:631, and choose 'administrative tasks'. Then fill in root and root password. Then check your printer config and if there are still jobs in the printer's queue.

Check out my post here... what?

Before doing any of the things listed here, try what Vergil83 told you, it may work just like that.

    Well, you would need:

    Code:
sudo apt-get install printconf hplip cupsomatic-ppd hpijs
    Then restart the print server:
    Code:
    sudo /etc/init.d/hplip restart
    sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart
Now open a browser and go at http://localhost:631 (you will be asked for a password, type your username password.
    > Click "Printers"
    > "Modify Printer"
    > Enter Name, Location, Description ; then click "Continue"
    > From the Device drop-down list, click hp:/usb/[printer name, serial number].
    For example, "hp:/usb/hp_deskjet_842c?serial=MY31R1K02179".
    > Click "Continue"
    > In the "Make" list, click "HP", and then click "Continue"
    > In the "Model" list, click the printer model, and then click "Continue"
(you should choose the foomatic recommended driver specific to your printer)

I know in Ubuntu it is supposed to be simpler then that, but when it does not work as expected, sometimes you have to go back to the basics.

    Well, this part:
Enter Name, Location, Description ; then click "Continue"

...really it won't affect the functionning of the printer. The important things come just after that...

Starting with the next screen, "device", it's important.

I've never try on slackware, but it should work well.
