How to open ports in Ubuntu?

I have the neccessary ports forwarded to my computer, but I don't know how to open them in ubuntu, as I don't see any settings in the main admin programs... or maybe I'm just overlooking something basic?

Unless you have a firewall running, they should be open unless already unless I'm mistaken.

Do you know if there's a firewall running on your box? Did you activate stuff like that? Do you have Guarddog or Firestarter installed?

Have a look in the control panels too. Maybe there's an option to configure a firewall. The linux kernel has firewall functionality by default, programs like Guarddog, Firestarter etc. are just mere front-ends.

    *hits head on wall*
Found the problem, it wasn't a firewall, it had to do with the program I was using. Anyways fixed now, sorry about that.

Well, the easiest solutions are always the best . I recommend you install a firewall however. If you use Guarddog for example, it's not that difficult to get it going. And you'll be a lot safer. You might not need AV in Linux, but you definitely need a firewall .
