Installing Ubuntu on iMac G3
I'm trying to install Ubuntu linux on an iMac G3 266, (266MHz G3, 64Mb RAM), and the installer keeps giving me random errors, for example, sometimes the installer freezes about about halfway thru loading the components off the CD, sometimes it tells me there's no boot partition on the cd and sometimes it just quits to a black screen. Ive tried every configuration I can think of (including typing 'expert' at the boot prompt and installing only the nescessary stuff), and I even burnt a new cd thinking that was a problem, but to no avail.
Is there anything im obviously doing wrong? I know the hardware isnt exactly up to scratch but it meets the minimum requirments....
Thanks in advance!

have you checked the md5sum of the cd?

Thanks for the reply!
Yes I have checked the md5sum (after you suggested it) and its way off the 'official' one posted on linuxiso.org but how do I rectify this? Will burning at a slower speed help?
Thanks again,
Martin

what you should do is redownload the cd ISO and check the checksum of the ISO file (not the burnt CD) BEFORE you burn it. This way you are guarenteeing the validity of the information BEFORE you write it to CD....this also helps because if you burn it and it doesn't work, you know your sources are good and it's your CD / burnable media which is the culprit.

Ok, i've downloaded the .iso file from a few different sources, and the md5 sums are ALWAYS different to the ones posted.... also I've burnt 12 cd's and tried about 5 different brands, and still I get problems. Can anyone tell me where I can get either an iso or a cd that is guaranteed to work?
Thanks,
Martin

Try burning the cd at a slower rate, eg not your fastest, even as low as 8x
also double check you are getting the ppc version, this is a common mistake, people getting tje wrong architecture
if you could give us a note of the errors that would be greatly helpful

Ok guys im really desperate now i need to get this computer up and running very soon.... I keep re-downloading the iso from different sources and the checksums NEVER match up. There must be another way to do this, I really dont want to give up and go back to OS 8, but its looking like the only solution at the moment....
Please help!!
TIA

An alternative is to order CD from them, last time I did they didn't even
charge me for shipping cost.

I know it's not a real answer to your problem. But i know of a way to get a official version that will always be correct without downloading it, it will just takea while (3 to 4 weeks) but its free, and it does work because i have them. go to www.shipit.ubuntu.com and make an account if you haven't got one. Then order what you want, make sure that you select a package that has mac cds in it, not just pc cds, i assure you that this will work
