A good place to download debian?

I want to download debian. However the size of the downloads is daunting. I have a DVD burner, but I havn't found a good torrent or FTP site where I can download these. All I'm looking for is someplace I can download it at over 20 kb's per second. Alternativlyis there a "pocket" version of Debian (not mepis or similar but actually Debian)? Could someone point me toward something?

    Thanks

If you have a high speed connection, then the netinstall is a good choice.

I agree with the netinstall method for installing Debian. It's way faster than trying to download a DVD full of files.

You can get the iso image you'll need here:

    http://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst

I personally use the businesscard.iso but you might want something else. Just burn the file to disk and boot your computer with it, then you'll be given the chance to install whatever packages you want from a large number of available mirrors. You don't get a bunch of unwanted packages this way.

Hope it works out for you, and that you have fun with it.

I'll try the net install, however I have a wireless card (A linksys WMP55AG with an Athreos Chipset) that is rarely supported out-of-the-box so it probably won't get much net installing done, but I can add whatever I want later.

    Thanks for the help!

your laptop does not have a built in LAN port? If i were you, i would borrow a PCMCIA ethernet card and just go for the net install that way...you figure if you do that once, you'll get most of what you need...and then you can also grab the madwifi (is that what atheros cards need? i forget) stuff at the same time and be movin and grooving before too long.

You can download Danm Small Linux and install from ISO. It's less than 50MB and wholds a copy of most application types, like spreadsheet, word processing etc.

I tried it as the live cd and it was fine:

Once installed you can fetch further applications as desired,

if you are having trouble w/ slow downloads when using symbian or apt-get, you just need to make sure that you have some "local" mirrors listed in the sources file. I found that a barebones install of a "desktop" fileset from a netinstall, and then some searching for the closest and most friendly sources yielded me with the fastest install times.

You can also check the Linux Mirror Project for a torrent. I find these to sometimes be MUCH better, especially on long downloads:

on-disk.com will download it for you and send it to you on CDs.

"If you need a download On-Disk and don't see it in our catalog, please use the contact form below to request it. We'll be hapy to burn it to CD/DVD and ship it to you."
