NTFS safety?
I have a blown IBM laptop which doesnt boot to WinXP because some needed files are corrupted. I need to copy those files from cd. I am using Live Ubuntu distro. All I want to ask is that is it safe to write into NTFS file system under linux?

Yes, but I would definitely use Knoppix for this endeavor.

Writing to the NTFS File System from Linux is not safe at all.
It is like a work in progress and you need to worry about severe data corruption if you have critical data in the Windows installed Hard drive.
The best option would be to copy the existing data to another hard disk, using the Ubuntu Live CD, or probably create another writable partition from the Ubuntu Live CD -- like Fat32 (vfat) and copy the data there. The latter will require you to reinstall windows.
PS: Why don't you do a repair of Windows using the Windows XP CD?
- 01-03-2006 #5i'm not an expert on this but i'd assume that he doesn't have an XP CD, since MS are adamant on not handing them out with new computers to combat piracy. load of crap IMO, since if the hdd fails you are screwed. come to think of it, there may be a recovery partition on your hdd if you're lucky (and didn't erase it). personally, i'd take it as a sign and erase windows
