    ubuntu network problem

    Hi, everyone,

ive encountered a problem in ubuntu which has been driving me nuts now.
I wanted to link a ubuntu box and a windowsXP box using a crossover cable, and make them sharing the internet connection.

I set my desktop box which on XP as a server , and my laptop which on winXP and ubuntu dual system as client. When I am under XP in my laptop, everything is just all right.

But when I am under Ubuntu, things become wierd. The server says: network cable is not plugged. BTW, I didn't change configuration.

I thought it was the cable that causes this problem, so I bought a switch and two straight through cable to join up two boxes, and the leds on the switch shows the connection to my server is on and that to my laptop is off. It frustrates me since when I link my laptop in a LAN before, it worked.

I wonder if the problem lies in the configuration of my network device?

    Any advice is appreciated.
