Kubuntu 5.10 Install - Resolution issue

Real noob here. I just finished a Kubuntu install. I have a few issues to resolve, but I'll deal with only one for now. I've read several threads re resolution issues, but they don't seem to address my problem. I'm using a Viewsonic e790b monitor (19" diag.), but even though I configured it to use a max res of 1600x1200 the desktop still doesn't use all of my monitor screen. <etc/X11/xorg.conf> lists my monitor as "generic". This doesn't seem to be a resolution issue, but rather one of getting my monitor recognized. How do I do this? Thanks for any help.

the bit in the xorg.conf file (Monitor section) that deals with monitor is really just there to put things like horizontal and vertical rates. When a monitor is recognised those vakues are taken from a simple database. If your monitor isn't in the database, just add the values yourself.

Have a look at the Horizontal Synch rate in your monitor's manual (or on the internet if you don't have one) and fill in the HorizSync values (mine look like this "HorizSync 30.0 - 72.0") then take the vertical refresh rate and fill in the VertRefresh values (mine look like "VertRefresh 50.0 - 160.0" ). You may also want to fill is the option for Display Power Management System by putting in ' Option "dpms" ' .

And then make sure that the range of resolutions imncludes the one you want, in the Display sub-section.

Use Suse 10.1 and occasionally play with Kubuntu
Also have Windows 98SE and BeOS
