No mouse control after gnome install in mepis

I installed gnome, after much pain, in Mepis and now my mouse doesn't work. I checked in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and their was a "#" next to the mouse part, which I removed. Also, when I start up my computer, I get a message saying: * udev requires a kernel >=2.6.12, not started.
    *failed

When this was installed it said, "please purge hotplug"

When I gave it this command: apt-get remove hotplug, it removed several gnome componets.

Well, thats all the info I have, does anyone have an idea on what is wrong with my mouse?

    -Thanks

i would recomend that you reinstall hotplug....that is most likely the culprit

I dont think "purge hotplug" meant "remove hotplug".....If removal was required, the install would have told you, and prompted you to allow the removal during the install

you might try installing and running mdetect. It is a nice little program (it is around for debian, I don't know about mepis).

Ok, I tried mdetect, but it didn't help. I'm just going to reinstall, I need my computer and I don't have any other usable os's on it.

why not upgrade your kernel as suggested ?

    Update your package list
    apt-get update

check for available 2.6 kernel versions
    apt-cache search linux-image-2.6

install the current 2.6 kernel so UDEV can start working..
    apt-get-install linux-image-2.6-686

Once you are running UDEV you won't need hotplug anymore..
    far...out
