    Unhappy can't open display

I recently installed linux and have some troubles starting using my machine efficiently.

In particular, I still unable to strat x windows or any graphical application.

with "startx" I got the grey screen with an error message: unable to find .xsession file.

then I created such a file with the command "exec gnome" and then I got the message " gnome is not a command...

If I try to open xpdf or xdvi or gv I have the message "can't open display"

    Can anyone help?

Many thanks for your help in advance.

    Moez

What distro are you running? Debian, Ubuntu, other?

Did you successfully install the x-window-system?

By Distro you mean "linux version": it is Debian.

yes I have installed x-window-system using apt-get without any error message.

Have you installed an Desktop environment or window manager? Try changing that .xsession to say
    Code:
    exec gnome-session
