Ok I've only just istalled Ubuntu myself like about 10 hours ago but I'm assuming this server problem thats coming up is before the actual installation and theres options to configure manually, auto configure and don't configure I just chose not to configure network for now and thought I could set it up later when it's actually installed.
As for IP address I'm sorry not sure how to find it in Windows or Linux.

To find the ip address of a computer in windows command is ipconfig, in linux it is in the output of ifconfig

Also, do you have a DHCP server on your network?
Life is complex, it has a real part and an imaginary part.

Most likely you can search google for your IP address. Unless you are behind a firewall one of the sites will find it, that's how I found mine.

To find you local ip address in Windoze click on 2 flashing computers in system tray and then goto Support tab.
To find your external IP goto whatismyip.com

    Wait...

What i did was just skip the network configuration and then wait untill Linux is installed. Then you can go into System>Network or Settings>Network, i can't remember which. When you're there you can click that 'administrator' button and type in your user password (or root's password) and configure the wireless or ethernet adapter to automatically detect dhcp settings. Then click 'enable'.

If it's a wireless card you might need to enable hotplug. But you can get into that later if it's even needed.
