Okay I finally got my KVM switch and had a sit down with the linux box. X wasn't starting because it complained there was no mouse attached (which there wasn't.) I connected a PS2 mouse directly and it still said there was no mouse attached.

I pulled the USB mouse off another computer (which I had used to install Debian with) and then it worked. Anyone know why my PS2 mouse won't work but the USB one will?

possibly the xserver configuration wasn't set to look at the ps2 port...

The PS/2 Mouse should also be connected to the PC during boot, if not they typically don't work (in Linux or Windows)
    far...out
