No Shift required.
Just Ctrl+Alt+Bksp, or Ctrl+Alt+F1.
The F1 option will not kill X. You can get back to it with Ctrl+Alt+F7.
Which distro are you using? Is Gdm enabled?How to know if you are a geek.
