14 cd setup - help needed
Hi, I am quite new to linux, and i have been using ubuntu for a while, and i decided to install debian "sarge" 3.1 on my laptop.
The problem i have should be simply fixed but i have no idea how to do it. i downloaded the 14 cd's and i used the first one and installed the base system etc. i start up and i have just got a command line.
how do i install the stuff on the other 13 cd's like gnome etc?
i mean i added them to apt using the apt-cdrom add tool and they are all there but i dont know how to install the stuff off of them.
i type apt-get install gnome, but it does not prompt me to insert any of the cd's or anything and therefore it fails to install.
they dont boot on their own.
help?

Hi Jamie,
Wasn't there an option to do an installation typical for a desktop when you were using the first CD?
When I installed Debian on my laptop, that option did just fine, although I used a netinstall CD, and not the CD set. Downloading all 14 CD's is a bit of a waist, I think you only need the first one.
Anyways, here's a nice link:
http://www.debian.org/releases/stabl.../index.html.en
It's an installation guide.
Regards,
Daan

No there wasn't it just installed the base system and i figured everything else has to be installed off of the other cd's. if not then what use are they?
I want to install all the software i can and really deck out my distribution if possible.
I installed debian for someone else on their computer and they had the dvd's, (i only have a cd drive), and that had that option, and the second disk had optional software.
All the guides I read say that there is all this software on the other 13 cd's, but how do i acces it? has anyone else installed off the 14 cd set?
I dont have the netinstall disk only the binary ones.

I tried that before.
It didn't work.
It just says broken pakages. It doesnt even ask for any cd's, even though i have checked the sources.list file and all of the cd's are listed.
I doubt this is as simple as something like that.
Thanks for your help though but this has really got me stumped. I only have dial-up (though a network so works easily) so installing from web is difficult. 175Mb download is just a bit much. (gnome).
Thats even if I could download it. (i cant)

Both gnome and KDE are on the first CD as stated earlier.
also the command to install them manually was correct. if none of that is working for you then I would think there is a problem with your CD's or how you completed the base install.
Here is a nice visual walkthrough of how the install is supposed to work..

If you look at slide number 34 you see the option for Desktop Environment.. it is hightlighted by default but NOT selected. you must select it manually for it to be installed.

I use the Netinstall as well.. no way am I going to download 14 CD's worth of software.. yikes !!far...out

The desktop environment is only on the netinstall disk not on the 1st binary disk.
that screen came up but didnt have the choice for desktop environment. For me it only had print server, mail server and file server.

You are wrong.. both gnome and x-window-system is on CD 1 as well as on DVD 1
Are you sure you have the official 3.1r1 Sarge image and not some daily build ?

using 14 sarge cds
As root type apt-setup and pick cd as source. Insert cd1 and say yes when asked about another cd until all 14 have been scanned. Then no when asked after cd14. Re-insert cd1. Then run apt-get update so all pkgs are added to database. If you want desktop system setup,as root run tasksel(or apt-get install tasksel) then pick desktop--making sure (*) shows and select with spacebar then scroll to bottom and finish. apt-get update apt-get install doesn't require internet connection when using cds/dvds. But connection will be needed for security updates and upgrades not on cds.
You can also forget tasksel and as root again run apt-get install mdetect read-edid discover x-window-system gnome gdm(or kde kdm) nano synaptic(for graphic pkg installer) alsa alsa-base alsa-utils(for sound) rcconf cupsys cupsys-bsd etherconf pppoeconf....But this requires you know what pkgs you want/need. There are many guides for setting up sarge desktop system via google and from earlier posts. Have fun with sarge
