soundcard, please help !!
hi,
dont know if you could help, but if you could it would be much appreciated. I have linux (xandros ) installed on a partitioned drive with xp my other operating system. A while ago i installed a creative soundcard so i could use a 5.1 speaker setup. On xp this is great, but on linux it is still using the original reatek output (i have a small set of stand alone speakers plugged in from my ipod ).
looking at the control center it can see the card but how do i make it the default one to use ?
please reply in laymens language as I`m a newbie to linux and not really up with the ins and outs of the system.
many thanks

xandros sound
What sound card did you add? The previous realtek is on motherboard? If so you can turn it off in your bios. When you boot your pc a message should say press shift or del or some other key to enter bios setup. Enter bios setup and look for on- board sound card(realtek) config and disable it. Exit and save bios configuration changes. Then reboot into xandros. Your pc manual should help here.
Then xandros' alsaconf will see only your new card and use that one. I am sure getting to terminal program in kde menu list(the button on left on bottom taskbar) and becoming root(su then root pw) then running alsaconf should set up the new card.
The xandros startup or getting started manual explains how to do this. If you dont have printed manual then it is on xandros web site. Hope this helps. The xandros forums have great howtos as well. Good luck.

realtek vs creative
Yes if you want to use creative(better card) disable realtek in bios then follow as best you can the earlier post.

nearly there ..... but, having trouble with this....
I am sure getting to terminal program in kde menu list(the button on left on bottom taskbar) and becoming root(su then root pw) then running alsaconf should set up the new card.
I`m logged in as root, and have tried to run alsaconf by opening run, putting alsaconf in and pressing return. nothing happens !
looking in the control centre under hardware and sounds I can see that realtek has been removed but it now says card config --no souncards-- and audio devices not enabled in config.
thanks

Got the alsaconf to run in the console, says no supported pnp or pci soundcard detected, asks if i want to probe for legacy isa soundcard, none of the ones listed are any good as yet....

creative sound card
Now best option is to check xandros forum for howto or help setting up that card. The desktop guide or startup guide is at their web page too. Sorry alsaconf didn't find card. Sometimes reboot and alsaconf will detect card.
lspci and lsmod at terminal(as root) will give helpful info before you ask at forum.
