AWE64 sound card config help needed as well as Java recommendations on Debian Sarge
Hi there!
I took a look around the forums and saw no info on this so I am going to give you a rundown on my situation. I have a PII computer with 450mhz and I am running Debian Linux i686 with kernel version 2.4.27-2-686. I tried to get my sound card to work by make menuconfig and compiling the kernel. That was not successful. I managed to configure ALSA to aknowledge my soundcard which is the Creative Soundblaster AWE64. In the control panel under sound and multimedia I switched the hardware to ALSA and when you go to the general tab and click test sound. I get the sound and that is great. Under hardware again my Soundblaster is showing properly for the Midi Device. However, when I click Test Midi under the General tab I don't get anything. Also when my other programs are running which should have sounds are not playing those sounds. I can play sounds through a player that came with my Debian. That program is Noatun. It plays everything that is in the sounds folder. So I am wondering if anyone can tell me what I should do to get the sounds to be played with the games and other programs that have sound. Any Suggestions?
Now on to my Java question. I would like to be able to play games online that use java aplets. Well I need to install java onto my machine. Can someone recommend a free java client that I can install?
Thanks for any help.

an inconvenient idea
I ran into basically the same problem ... and I hope someone who knows more than a newbie
like me replies to this post. My solution was to use/install the 2.6 kernel option,
because the 2.4 kernel uses OSS for sound, and 2.6 uses Alsa, and I could not seem to get the Alsa wrappers to work properly. Next I installed alsa-utils and alsa-base and ran alsa-conf.
My sound then worked until I booted and I ended up editing /etc/modules by hand
(I just put in the module that alsa selected and installed).
Last I had to stop esd from running, in was starting due to my desktop preferences sound
had enable sound server at startup selected.
I hope someone else has a better idea, it was a bit of work.
I know nothing about JAVA ... hope someone else does.
Good Luck,
Steven Peckham.

as scpeckham said you may have to upgrade to the 2.6 kernels. The only other advice I can give is make sure no other sound systems (like oss) are running.
For the java question, there are a couple different ways to install java in debian. take a look at
