    won't shutdown

    hi...i have just erased win95 and installed debian3.1. upon selecting log out and shutdown from the menu the system shuts down fine but does not power off. it reboots. it is a p2 233mhz, 96mb ram, 6gb hdd. i have the gnome desktop and i think grub was installed. thanks

    Try to do this from the command line as root:

    shutdown -h now

    wont shutdown

    I have p233 pc that also wont shutdown all the way (with slackware10.2 and debian etch apm or acpi) but waits for me to power off. This is because my bios doesn't support shutdown including poweroff. You can check your bios apm or acpi power management setup for an option to allow shutdown including poweroff or maybe there is bios upgrade available.
    But if that is your only problem then you are blessed with an otherwise successfull install. For more zip add some more memory. Good luck.
