    post installation gnome install?

i am not sure wether this should be in here or the knoppix forum, but since i did a debian/gnu hd install of knoppix i thought i might as well post it here.

my question is is is it possible to change from kde to gnome after a hd installation? i have gnome on the debian sarge disks and i tried to go "apt-get remove kde" but that didnt exist, and when i typed "apt-get install x-window-system gnome" after "apt-cdrom add" ing the cd's, it tried to install but failed with an error of unmet dependencies that are not going to be installed. this fudged up the OS big time and i reinstalled knoppix.

is this possible or do i have to put up with kde?

    Hi Jamie,

I don't really understand what you have installed. From your previous thread I understood you installed Debian, and I don't know what a Debian/GNU HD install of Knoppix would be. I thought Debian and Knoppix were two different things and that Knoppix was just a live CD.

Anyways, I have succesfully removed all things KDE from my Debian installation by removing packages that depend upon kdelibs. See my thread

    http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/deb...emove-kde.html

Note that you don't have to remove KDE to be able to use Gnome (at least not in Debian). It's also possible to run programs designed for KDE on the Gnome Desktop, which can be nice (but then you need kdelibs ofcourse).

Knoppix is a highly modified Debian, so if you installed from knoppix then added the Debian CD's as sources, installing or updating things is definately going to cause something to break.

Why not just do the standard Debain install, if you choose desktop environment during the install it will install both KDE and GNOME, and you can simply choose which you want on the login screen.

if you see my other thread:

    http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/lin...-internet.html

you will see that the reason i have knoppix installed (on my laptop) is because of the wireless lan - ndiswrapper didnt work in debian due to missing kernal sources. When i installed debian i was unable to choose a desktop environment thingo because of an error due to using the 14 cd install instead of the dvd install. i had to add gnome afterwards.

knoppix is the only one i have for the moment that ndiswrapper works on (no less already installed on) and i want to use gnome with my knoppix hd istallation.

    any ideas?

that could have been fixed with apt-get install kernel-source-2.X-686 the X being either a 4 or a 6 depending on which kernel you have installed .. easily fixable. as to your current problem, dunno what to tell ya.

    gnome on knoppix

If you did debian type hd install you should be able to apt-get install gnome gdm. Check your /etc/apt/sources.list that they point to debian sources not cd or dvdrom. Knoppix uses Sid mainly but may be Etch/Sid combo like my Kanotix. The new sid gnome is 2.12. Etch uses 2.10.
Once you have gnome the way you like it you can apt-get remove kdelib3 kdelibs4 to remove kde, if that's what you want.
You may find knoppix forums helpful as well as http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/. I think gnoppix is like knoppix but based on ubuntu and comes with gnome. Good luck.
