I have no idea what to do.. I am a complete & total novice here.. like 5 days novice.. I could really use some assistance. I love the idea of working with Linux but this is a whole new world for me competely beyond anything I've done before.. I really need someone to hold my hand through these first stages of learning.. I swear it is my goal to pass this on to other people who are used to Windows & enlighten the world with the free software generation beyond the whole dominate paradigms..

    Thanks for your help!!

    Try running 'kdm'.

    use this command:

    Code:
    echo "exec startkde" > ~/.xinitrc
    then:

    Code:
    startx
All right, brain. You don't like me and I don't like you, but let's just do this and I can get back to killing you with beer. All New Users Read This!!! If you have a grub problem please look at GRUB MANUAL

it looks like you are trying to log into the X server as root. You should not do this.

Switch to a regular user and make sure the only thing in your .xinitrc file is the exec startkde

you can find this out by

    less ~/.xinitrc

As root, start the kde manager. At the root prompt, type "/etc/init.d/kdm start" That should bring up the gui. From there you should get a graphical login prompt.

What have you been using then, gnome?
Do an "ls -l /etc/rc2.d" You should see either S99gdm or S99kdm. ONE of the two should be there. It should show you where the file is linked to, which should be either /etc/init.d/gdm or /etc/init.d/kdm

"I'd like to ask that have you installed Xserver or a Desktop Environment ?"

I believe so.. but then again this whole world is completely alien to me..

Okay your talking to a complete beginer here.. I haven't done anything to start a program before in my life that didn't involve clicking my mouse over it.. I don't know how to start up these things & my books I have aren't making it all that much easier either.. I typed in everything you said & got the following results..

    /etc/init.d/kdm start
Not starting K Display Manager (kdm); it is not the default display manager.

What have you been using then, gnome? Yes..

    ls -l /etc/rc2.d

    I see S99kdm

Please advise & please understand I know absolutely NOTHING about any of this stuff!! I'm about to reboot Windows onto my computer.. this stuff is so cryptic & hard.. I never wanted to be a hacker I just wanted to be able to have a free operating system that didn't come from a big heartless corperation.. if this stuff doesn't get any easier I really don't know if Linux is for the general population..

It appears that you have installed Desktop Environment. Back to your original post

    Instead of
    #startkde

    Try....simply.
    #kdm

That should start KDE login screen.
