Issues with nVidia GeForce FX 5500 & nVidia Drivers

Whenever I tell X to use the nVidia drivers, X crashes. Can someone help me with this? It is an eVGA nVidia GeForce FX 5500 256 MB, and uses an AGP slot. The distro is Ubuntu.

    take a look at
    Code:
    /var/log/Xorg.0.log
and see if it is giving you any information about why x is failing

Here's Xorg.0.log.old, which should show the problems that occured when the nvidia driver was running: (attached, it is about 30,000 characters)

If you need it, I'll post the results using the nv driver.

Is that the whole file? It looks like the end of the output is missing. When X fails to initialize, there's normally an error at or near the end of the log file.

Yes, that's the whole output. Also, that time, it crashed while loading the ubuntu log-in screen, with a little bit at the bottom still white, but the mouse was moveable.

    New to Linux

I'm only now just starting to use Linux (Ubuntu) and I have the same problem, and it just boots to the prompt, not to the desktop. My bro had been using Linux on it, then I got it back from him, switched the video card, and it doesn't work, and I have no idea what to do.

How did you install the drivers?

I have pretty much the same card on my Debian/Kanotix system and it runs great.

    Host/Kernel/OS "KanotixBox" running Linux 2.6.16.16-kanotix-1 i686
CPU Info AMD Duron clocked at [ 1800.255 MHz ]
    Videocard nVidia NV34 [GeForce FX 5500] X.Org 7.0.0 [ 1024x768 @85hz ]

My suggestion would be to search the Ubuntu wiki and "official" forums. There are a lot of dedicated people that know pretty much everything there is to know about Ubuntu.

Here is a guide on installing Nvidia drivers for Dapper.
