cpu fan won't work in Kubuntu 5.1

which is a big problem b/c I am using a laptop. After about an hour of using Kubuntu, my cpu gets extremely hot. It works great in WinXP Pro, kicking on about every 15-30 seconds. My specs:

Intel Pentium M 1.6 GHz Centrino (ACPI complaint)
    512 MB RAM
    60 Gig HD

Am very new to linux. Any ideas to get it working?

with ubuntu and kubuntu i have struggled with acpi support on my laptop with almost identical specs. all i did was remove acpi and it works fine...i just don't get to know the time remaining on my battery life only a percentage.
