    debian vs ubuntu



    so ive been using ubuntu for a few weeks now and i love it!

    ive heard its like the stepchild of debian (never tried debian) which brings me to my point

    what are the differences between ubuntu and debian, anything compelling enough to make me switch? ive heard debian has huge package repos which is a plus, although ubuntu does too...

    This page in the Ubuntu wiki highlights the main differences, except that the parts about apt-get and movies, music, etc. are the same on Debian.

    It's more newbie-friendly than straight Debian, but after using Linux a few years I find that I prefer Debian or even Mepis (which is based on Debian Testing and maintains strict compatibility with Debian, but includes the non-free software that I end up installing on Debian anyway).
