    Newbie: my network doesn't network

    Newbie question: please be patient!
I have just installed Debian from Knoppix; Knoppix saw everything on my system and it all worked like magic. Now I have a full install, but can't connect to the internet or to my local network. Every time I try, I get the error message
The connection was refused when trying to connect to...

Under windows I'd know what to do: it's as though I don't have TCP/IP bound to the network card, but I can't figure out how to do that, if that's the problem.

The hardware cards (eth0 and eth1) are physically there, but aren't networking me. How do I configure them?

Thanks for your time, help and patience!

what kind of network do you have? router?
Do you use dhcp or static ip adresses?
Now what? You have Linux installed and running. The GUI is working fine, but you are getting tired of changing your desktop themes. You keep seeing this "terminal" thing. Don't worry, they'll show you what to do @

It's just two other PCs running windows (XP and win98 ) and a printserver connected via cable to a netgear router/adsl modem at 192.168.0.1 The netgear box has a DHCP server inside it, but I've reserved IP numbers in the netgear configuration for the 3 PCs for various other reasons- their internal IP numbersare all in the 192.168.0.n series
