    Display Manager / X / Monitor problems

    Hey guys,

I've installed a Debian system on an ancient desktop pc and everything works great except the monitor won't display a gnome or kde interface. I've tried both. From a Windows laptop, using winaXe and putty, I can successfully export the gnome or kde display to my laptop and it appears exactly as it should. I just cant get it to work on the monitor attached to the debian box. If I shut down the gdm/kdm it works fine without a gui. I've ran dkpg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 several times and it recognizes the exact model of the monitor I'm using. Does anyone have any ideas? I can post the XF86Config-4 or XFree86.0.log if you like.

    Thanks,

    Dan

    1) ok if you are running a gdm or xdm, if not just go to step two, at the login then ctl-alt-f1, you will be at a login prompt, root login, and then /etc/init.d/gdm stop, or /etc/init.d/xdm stop, then logout and go to step two

    2) login as your user and type start x, then when it fails to display, hit ctl-alt-f1, you should be at the shell and will see which errors are causing your x-display to work improperly...post back what is on that screen and we'll get you straightened out pretty quickly

Display Manager / X / Monitor problems (Problem Solved)

    Genesus,

Thanks for replying. I solved the problem with help from a guy in the debian.net forum. I was using the vesa driver. Ran lspci and found out i was using an intel card. Ran dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and changed to the i810 driver, put 0 (kb) in the memory field, left everything else the same, restarted gnome and it worked great.

    Problem solved- thanks again

    ~Dan
