    Using apt-get / dpkg

I'm familiar with yum from fedora, but not apt-get.

I understand "apt-get install package" is used to retrieve and install apps.
And "dpkg -i package.deb" installs downloaded apps.

Is there a way to use apt-get to install downloaded packages and retrieve dependencies for me? dpkg -i does not get dependencies. I've read numerous howtos but they have nothing on this.

You should look into gdebi: http://packages.debian.org/unstable/admin/gdebi

It will install local deb files and install its deps as well.
