IS there a reason you have to compile a new kernel?

You can just use apt/Synaptic to install a new one.

Are you trying to do it the Debian way?

Most kernels from 2.4 up have iptables enabled.

    Thanks for your reaction.....

I compiled the kernel 2.6.16.19 with the information from how to forge I also enabeled the iptables modules in : networking --> networking options --> Core netfilter configuration//\\
but still I got a iptables not found error when I tried to start Shorewall.
When I did modprobe ip_tables the error message was: "FATAL: Module iptable_filter not found."

    Thanks in advance....
